It seemed appropriate that I start my blog with an allusion to it’s name Be Like Water.  There are many reasons why I called it that, but the most important one is, simply put,  Bruce Lee is a badass! He is such an inspiration to me and to so many others. He was a master of his body and trained everyday, all day, to be the optimal human. His physicality was fueled by philosophy and had weight to it. That is how he made simple action movies with weak plots into art. When I watch those movies, I am captivated.   In 1971 he was interviewed by Pierre Burton and said this,

Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves. Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash.

Be water, my friend.”

I love this quote. It says so much about life and for me it ties in with Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (BCST) so well. In my training, I was taught to empty my mind, be still, non-intrusive; observe and the body will reveal its patterns and gently let go of points of tension.

It can flow or it can crash.

The work can be very subtle or deeply profound, it can be cumulative or it can be instant in its transformations.

Running water never goes stale so you have to just keep it moving

In my work as a BCST, I focus my attention on the fluid body – the two thirds of us that is water, mutable, changing and is the force that heals. If the flow of fluids is unobstructed, the body is working at its optimal capacity. Same idea.

I will finish by saying this. Bruce Lee will always be my hero. He lived his life at the apex of human potential. What a wonderful thing to aspire to.

The quote in gold at the beginning of this post links to a cool remix of the interview he did with Peirre Burton. I recommend watching it any time you feel the need to be inspired.  Until next time…

Be like water, my friend.
